I Purchased a Bike Shop

Today is Earth Day.

I decided to purchase a bike shop.

I don’t know whether today’s being Earth Day holds any significance in relation to my decision, but bicycles are good for Earth. Not good for Earth per se, but good for Earth as a mode of travel when compared to other modes of travel.

It’s just a coincidence, my buying a bike shop and it being Earth Day. But my friend Alex Caldiero says there is no such thing as coincidence. There are only CO-incidences, emphasis on the co, meaning two, as in collaborator, coconspirator, cooperator, coworker.

There is my decision, my intention, my work, and there is something else at work.

That’s how coincidence feels, anyway. And that’s why it’s such a beautiful thing.

Maybe this coincidence suggests I will build beautiful bicycles for beautiful people for this beautiful Earth.

Oh, the bike shop I decided to purchase isn’t a retail outlet, but rather the tools for bicycle fabrication—milling machine, frame jig, fixtures—the means for a proper shop. That is what I’ll have when I move them into my garage.

Now I must drive to Santa Cruz, California, and retrieve them.
